Break of Structure vs Change of Character

Traders use the terms break of structure and change of character interchangeably, but they describe different moments on a chart. Confusing the two leads to premature entries and missed reversals.

Break of structure in an existing trend

A break of structure (BOS) occurs when price continues in the direction of the prevailing trend by taking out the most recent swing point in that direction. In an uptrend, price breaks the prior swing high. The trend is confirming itself — not reversing.

During our Chart Lab sessions, participants often label the first BOS after a long consolidation as a reversal. It rarely is. Ask: did price break structure in the trend direction, or against it?

Change of character signals a shift

A change of character (ChoCh) happens when price breaks a swing point that protected the opposite side of the move. In an uptrend, price takes out the last higher low. That is the first sign the buyers lost control of structure.

ChoCh does not guarantee a reversal. It means the prior narrative is under review. Wait for a retest or a secondary confirmation before committing size.

Practice prompt

Find three historical examples on your charts where a ChoCh preceded a major move. Label the exact candle that broke structure, the swing point it violated, and whether a BOS followed in the new direction. Keep these in a notebook — pattern recognition improves with repetition, not with indicators.
